Mercy Mats Volunteer Ministry

Catholic Charities’ Mercy Mats Volunteer Ministry creates sleeping mats from recycled plastic bags and distributes them to the homeless.  Each mat provides not only a cushioned, pest-resistant sleeping alternative to the ground or concrete, it is also a protective barrier against surfaces that are wet and cold. The mats are nonabsorbent, easily cleaned, light-weight and roll-up for portability.  The mats will be distributed primarily through Parish Kitchen in Covington, a ministry of Catholic Charities which serves a hot lunch-time meal 365 days a year.

Who can volunteer?  Individuals, families or groups of all ages.

What skill/talent is needed?  The simplest of abilities to collect, sort by color, count and cut.  Crocheting is a plus but not required; although if willing to learn, we are ready to teach!

Where can I learn more and get involved?  Monthly gatherings are on the 3rd Thursday, 9:00-11:30 AM at Catholic Charities. Your first visit includes a tutorial of the process with hands-on practice of each step and ways to help beyond the gatherings.

What should I bring?  Recycled plastic bags (no specific amount; whatever you have on hand), SHARP scissors and if you crochet, the largest needle you have!

Is regular attendance necessary to participate? No.  While it’s important as a Ministry to offer a regular gathering time for those who enjoy and are able to share fellowship monthly, we also recognize that some may have circumstances that conflict with or will not allow for regular attendance.  However, attending one gathering for learning purposes is most important as is the opportunity to meet you!  As mentioned, part of your first visit includes ways to participate beyond the gatherings.  Thereafter, how often you attend is up to you; although we hope to see many volunteers and often!!

Do I need to sign-up?  No, just show up when it’s convenient for you!

Can I bring someone?  We encourage it!
