School Mental Health Counselor

We are looking for a counselor for our School-Based Counseling Program for the upcoming school year from August 16th, 2019 thru May 31st, 2020. The position is 40 hours per week, or 100% FTE for 9½ months.

  • Job Functions: The staff person performs all the duties of the mental health master’s level staff with an ability to work under minimal supervision. They are asked to implement educational programs and interventions, performs school counseling tasks, and provide therapeutic services

Educational and Experiential Criteria:

  • Master’s degree in Social Work or Human Services field
  • State Licensed (preferred) or license eligible

Desired Skills, Experience and Qualifications include:

  • Assessment, diagnosis (knowledge of DSM 5), and treatment of children and youth
  • Engagement skills with parents and school staff
  • Creative, flexible approach to meet the needs of both the student and the school
  • Case documentation
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills
  • Basic computer skills necessary
  • Experience with children and families in the area of mental health including the specialized area of school counseling with grades K-12
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Practicing Roman Catholic 

Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Implement School counseling in K-12 schools.
  • Classroom visits at the beginning of the year to familiarize students with the program and provide opportunities for them to refer themselves.
  • Provide assessments, diagnosis, and treatment of referred children/youth by collecting background information, meeting with the student at school, and making recommendations to parents and teachers on the student’s behalf.
  • Make appropriate referrals to outside agencies, community services, and other resources as needed.
  • Provide on-going counseling for students when it is deemed urgent and productive.
  • Provide appropriate outreach to students and families (i.e. classroom presentations, parent awareness meetings, etc.).
  • Comprehensive school interventions that meet the school’s need.
  • Consult and coordinate with school personnel and other providers of services to students.
  • Meet for regular supervision with Administrative and Clinical Supervisors.
  • Maintain the best practices in counseling through consultation and supervision provided by the agency and through the clinician’s own resources.
  • Keep all records current and in compliance with the quality assurance program and accreditation standards.
