Mental Health Services

Catholic Charities has been providing the Therapeutic Counseling program since 1962. The Therapeutic Counseling program is accredited by the Council of Accreditation of Services to Families and Children since 1995 (click on COA). Counselors within the program are experienced in many areas of practice and can help clients address a wide array of concerns. Counselors in the Therapeutic Counseling program at Catholic Charities have master’s degrees in mental health or human service fields and are trained and licensed in their respective fields, including Psychology, Social Work, Clinical Counseling, and Marriage and Family Therapy.

Counselors in the Therapeutic Counseling program have an average of eighteen years experience. Counselors approach each client in a unique fashion using a variety of current and proven techniques to address a problem. When a client contacts the agency they first speak to an intake staff member who can answer initial questions about the program. A sliding scale fee for services is determined by obtaining the gross income of each client and family size for each client . Prior to the first face to face session, income is verified and an appointment is scheduled with the counselor. At the first session, the counselor and the client begin to work on establishing rapport and identifying the issues that will be used to develop goals. The approach in counseling is holistic, collaborative, and is individualized for each client ( What is counseling?). A unique aspect of Catholic Charities Therapeutic Counseling program is the opportunity to include spirituality as a part of the process.

The Therapeutic Counseling program is projected to serve over 500 clients in 2010. As counselors work with each individual client, they may provide individual adult or child counseling, couples therapy, or family therapy. A part time staff psychiatrist is available one morning per week to evaluate and administer medication to adults that might need this intervention. 415 adults and 85 children are projected to be seen in the program in 2010. Outcomes are developed for the program and outcomes instruments are used to measure the effectiveness of the program. For all services provided in the program, counselors collaborate with agency services that clients may be receiving outside the organization or counselors refer to programs within the organization. Besides referrals to the staff psychiatrist, therapeutic counseling program staffs most often refer to the following Catholic Charities programs: Substance Abuse Treatment, Parenting, and Housing (click on each program).

Since 2003, Catholic Charities Therapeutic Counseling program has been a member of the Homeless Services Project. This project is funded by Housing and Urban Development and is a collaborative project that identifies homeless clients in Northern Kentucky and provides temporary housing, substance abuse treatment, case management, psychiatric medication, educational assistance, and mental health counseling. Catholic Charities has been proud to provide the mental health counseling portion of this important Homeless Services Project (HSP). In 2008, the Therapeutic Counseling program has been providing services to clients referred by the Kentucky Cabinet for Families and Children in a newly developed program entitled the Substance Treatment Alternatives Response Team (START). The START program serves parents who have a substance abuse and/or mental health diagnoses that have negatively impacted their ability to parent their children. Catholic Charities has been excited to engage in partnerships like HSP and START to address the needs of these clients. We are also happy to collaborate with the United Way of Greater Cincinnati, who has been partnering with Catholic Charities to help provide quality programs since 1990 (click on UW website)
