Extend a Hand. Change a Life.

Asset Building for Children

Catholic Charities’ ABC (Asset Building for Children) Program provides services to students designed to enhance the factors that help elementary school age children to develop important social skills. This approach helps to develop a child’s ability to succeed in school, teaches children/youth to avoid risky behavior and resist peer pressure, and encourages respect for self and others. All programs are research based. Principals choose which program and which grade level based on their schools' needs. (Classroom Prevention Groups)

Programs

BABES (Beginning Alcohol & Other Addictions Basic Educational Studies)

Using puppets, storybooks, music, dance, role playing, art and discussions, BABES teaches skills such as decision making and resisting peer pressure in a factual, non-threatening way, and offers guidance on how to help children from chemically dependent or abusive homes. This is for students in grades 1 and 2.

KELSO's Choice

This conflict-management curriculum is based on the premise that every child is capable of becoming a peacemaker. Designed around Kelso the Frog, an appealing hand puppet, this program offers nine options students can choose from to resolve conflicts. Students learn to differentiate between problems they can handle on their own and those requiring adult intervention.
Grades 1 to 2.

Steps to Respect

This program teaches friendship and respect skills and how to decrease bullying in schools. Students learn how to recognize, refuse, and report bullying when it happens to them or someone else. They learn friendship skills that reduce the risk of being bullied, including how to make friends, join group activities, and manage conflicts. Students are taught how to understand the feelings of others and how to manage emotions.
