Our mission calls us to work through “partnerships that strengthen communities.” The agency has provided organizing services in Northern Kentucky and the diocese for over thirty years.
During the past twenty years our neighborhoods have weakened. The task of community organizing is to increase the capacity of residents, businesses and institutions to develop and to encourage participation in positive change.
Catholic Charities along with the more than 250 businesses in Latonia, has a responsibility to be a good neighbor and strengthen the community.
Community Organizing
Catholic Charities’ office is located near Ritte’s Corner Latonia. In 2003 Catholic Charities allocated organizing staff to begin a community building project, Latonia Community Partners. Its mission is to promote Latonia’s heritage and pride, build connections and strengthen neighborhoods.
Latonia Community Partners publishes the Latonia Directory, as well as the Latonia Journal to build knowledge and pride in Latonia. The group also works on community projects like the annual Children’s Fest which takes place in May. If you would like to receive a Latonia Directory contact Karen Rowe at 859-581-8974
Latonia Community Partners helped reorganize the Latonia Business Association in 2005.
Ritte's Corner Latonia
Latonia has 150 years of history. In 1854 a railway crossing was built in what would later become the center of Latonia. Latonia became an important destination in 1883 with the opening of the Latonia Race Track. Latonia was an independent city for 15 years before joining with Covington in 1909. Many Latonia residents are proud of their heritage, and identify with the Latonia neighborhood as their community.
Today, Latonia is the largest of Covington’s eighteen neighborhoods. More than twenty percent of Covington’s population, over four thousand households, lives in Latonia.. Ritte’s Corner, the historic commercial district, is the heart of the community. Latonia is a vibrant community with three elementary schools, a high school, fifteen churches and the two shopping centers.
